Noé Delpech: Sailing with Heart, Not a Plan

12/06/2025

Noé Delpech isn’t someone who maps out his life in advance. He’s let encounters, opportunities, and challenges guide his path. For him, sailing has always been a collective adventure, where performance goes hand in hand with human connection.

"I’m very comfortable in group settings, I adapt easily," he says. Open and positive, Noé builds strong bonds quickly and instinctively sees the best in others, a precious quality in team racing, where trust is everything.

He grew up on Réunion Island, between sea and mountains. It was his father who introduced him to sailing at the age of seven. Noé started in the Optimist, surrounded by a tight-knit group of friends, discovering racing together. Ten kids, same level, same spark. Competition quickly became a game."As a child, it all happened naturally. I never dreamed of the Olympics, but I loved following sailing, reading the magazines,I knew all the names, whether offshore racers or dinghy sailors. It made me dream a little, but I never thought I’d become a pro sailor."

What propelled him forward was the energy of the group, the thrill of competition, and the joy of testing himself. “We were a strong bunch of young sailors, and we pushed each other hard,” he recalls with a smile.

He soon formed a promising 420 duo with Morgan Lagravière, coached by Gabriel Jean-Albert, then freshly crowned world champion in the same class. Their results followed: a podium finish at the French nationals, two U17 world titles. Their talent was undeniable, and the French Sailing Federation quickly took notice. In 2003, Noé joined the sport-studies program in Antibes, then the Pôle France in Marseille, a city that’s been home for over 20 years.

Next came seasons of intense competition in the Olympic 49er class, known for its technical and physical demands. Noé represented France at five Olympic campaigns, achieving a strong 5th place in Rio 2016 alongside teammate Julien d’Ortoli, a solid result in a discipline where the slightest error can cost dearly.

But beyond rankings, it’s Noé’s inner strength that sets him apart: a calm presence, a deep resilience, and unwavering optimism. After a difficult non-selection for the Tokyo Olympics, despite a silver medal at the World Championships in Aarhus with Matthieu Frei, and a forced break during COVID, he faced a period of doubt. With a master’s in management, marketing, and communication, he questioned his future: Should I turn the page? But the call of the sea was louder."I told myself: sailing is what I love most. It’s where I feel most fulfilled, where I perform best, and where I feel I bring the most to the team."

Now 39, Noé is looking toward new horizons. Ever curious, he’s drawn to a fresh challenge: offshore racing. Whether in a crew or solo, the call of the open ocean excites him. He enjoys testing his limits, seeing how he reacts when the wind shifts and nothing is certain."I like putting myself in uncomfortable situations, to see how I respond when things get rough, and how I rise to meet the challenge." This summer, he’s expected to step aboard the maxi-trimaran Sails of Change for his first taste of offshore multihull sailing.

At the same time, he keeps feeding his thirst for adventure, discovery, and friendship, cycling trips like a backpack tour around Corsica, or simply sunrise moments at sea. His need for space, challenge, and shared experiences never fades.

To young sailors just starting out, his advice is clear:"Don’t set limits for yourself. Do what you love, without overthinking it."A philosophy grounded in the experience of a sailor who lets life unfold, but always follows his own compass: one guided by heart and passion.
