Tomorrow (Saturday 11 June), the starting gun for the 83rd edition of the Bol d'Or Mirabaud will sound from Société Nautique de Genève at 10:00 CET, and the TF35s will join more than 2,500 competitors in the world's largest lake regatta.
The record for the 123 kilometer (66.5 nautical mile) course has been held since 1994 by the trimaran Triga IV in 5h01m. The TF35s took part in the prestigious Swiss race for the first time last year, but with the breeze barely reaching six knots all day, it was slow progress. Thirteen hours later, as darkness fell, the wind finally kicked in for a 25-knot sprint between five TF35s to the finish line in which Bertrand Demole's Ylliam XII - Comptoir Immobilier took the win.
"It is a great pride to be the title holder of the Bol d'Or Mirabaud, so our aim, is to push hard to defend bowl this year. It's a unique race because everything can change in a moment. Last year we were racing for 13 hours, and the first five boats arrived within 30seconds of each other," said owner and helm Demole.
For this year's edition of the race Lionel Fontannaz, Meteorologist at Météo Suisse presented a forecast for this weekend of stable sunny conditions and light breezes on all parts of the lake.
All eyes will be on Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi Red Bull Racing as the Swiss America's Cup challenger team are local heroes on their home waters: "The Bol d'Or Mirabaud is an unmissable event for us. It is the festival of the lake and our team, like all the other local sailors, are delighted to participate. We are aiming for a good performance with our TF35, so let's see if these training sessions have paid off," explained Arnaud Psarofaghis.
For spectators ashore, the Bol d'Or Mirabaud race village will be hosted at the Société Nautique de Genève in a combined celebration of its 150th anniversary.
